The epidemic of the pandemic. Is it time to leave your job?

It seems that the pandemic is causing an epidemic of people feeling either unfulfilled in their job or contemplating actually leaving their job.

In the last few months as I’ve chatted with prospective clients, I’m hearing more and more that what they’re seeking is a new direction in life. A new job or career. 

REASONS FOR LEAVING

Each person’s story is slightly different, as is their age and stage in life. But the common themes that show up in conversations when people feel it’s time to leave their job are those of: 

• Feelings of lack of purpose, or even awareness of their purpose. 
• Exhaustion from being overworked due to the pandemic.
• Their employers, or their own, lack of boundaries around home life and work. 
• The pace at which their life is now running. 
• The company has changed and is no longer in alignment with their values. 
• The position is unfulfilling. 

One thing is for certain, the major upheaval in our world, caused by the pandemic, has resulted in people wanting some sense of control back in their lives. Changing jobs or careers is definitely one way of doing that. Has this become the epidemic of the pandemic? 

WHERE DOES COACHING FIT IN?

When people feel that they are at a major cross road in their lives; trying to decide, do I go left or do I go right, they want to talk to someone about it. They want to verbalize their thoughts, try to get them organized, run through scenarios, picture the future. 

With a coach they can do all of these things while at the same time brainstorm on options or dreams. The big part of doing this in coaching is that they don’t have everyone they speak to telling them what they should or shouldn’t do, often causing greater confusion and frustration. 

Working on finding a purpose, changing jobs or leaving your job because it’s unfulfilling, are all topics clients bring too coaching. 

QUESTIONING OUR LIVES

Perhaps there has been a great positive to the pandemic. It’s given us all the time to pause. To wake up and question, what are we doing? Where are we going and why are we going there? 

The epidemic of the pandemic may be that people are leaving their jobs in droves. But maybe this is what many needed to have their own awakening. To begin to question rather than moving blindly through. Perhaps, in some ways, the epidemic of the pandemic was that many may have actually gotten their lives back.
