So what is the real value of coaching? You can find a plethora of articles and videos online about the value of coaching. Many written by coaching schools or coaches working with executives. But what’s the real value of coaching for you, the individual. The one focusing on problems in your relationship or the one who hates their job or the one who feels restless in their life.
Our chaotic world
Our world can feel like it’s spinning faster and faster every day. Phones endlessly beeping reminders, our inbox overflowing, to do lists as long as our arms. It can feel chaotic most days. At the end of the day we can find ourselves in one of two places. We’ve either shut down from everyone and everything or, we never shut down, we just burn out.
Lessons from a client to a coach
The writing of this month’s blog was inspired by a current client. During a recent call the focus was on celebrating all that he had learned about himself and his way of being in the world since starting coaching. It was a celebration of the work done so far, the effort extended and the commitment he had made to himself.
These are the things a coach strives to help their client achieve and what this particular client shared has been his realization since saying yes to integrating coaching into his life.
- It’s been important to learn that the current way of doing things wasn’t working, that having a different approach was the key to change.
- Coaching helped to create a presence of mind. One that he was unable to create on his own.
- Coaching time is creative time, it’s time dedicated to thinking about one’s life differently. It’s a purposeful way to slow down that chaotic life, a gift to ones self that no one else can give you.
- Through coaching greater realizations have begun to surface. A realization of where and how he is stuck and the need to change.
The real value of coaching
Though many clients choose to work towards a certain goal or outcome with a coach, it’s key to have a destination to move towards, the realization that hits them is how important it is to reflect on the journey. Pausing long enough in life to stop the chaotic world and just breath, look and listen.
When you say yes to coaching you’re giving yourself the biggest gift possible, the value of a conscious, present life. One that does not have space for regrets or missed opportunities, one that has value. Because as Henry Ford said, “ if you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.”
To all of my clients over the past year, thank you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your personal journey. To hear and honour your new presence of mind and your new way of being. And thank you for the self compassion displayed in giving yourself a break from our chaotic world by allowing yourself time pause, breathe and reflect.
